Solagrow PLC is a Dutch Holding company that was registered in Ethiopia in 2006 and started operations in Debre Zeit in 2007. Its name is a combination of the Latin word ‘solanum’ [a group of crops that the potato is part of] and ‘grow’. The company acts as a distributor of agricultural inputs to Ethiopian farmers, mainly smallholder farmers.

Over 470 employees work on a total of eight farms set up with the objective of producing better seeds and better breeds of dairy cattle. The farms are either used for testing or demonstration purposes.

They are located throughout Ethiopia at different altitudes. In the highlands (Wenchi and Doba) at an altitude of 2,400 - 3,000m and the headquarters in Hidi at 2,000m, Solagrow has fields for basic and certified seed production. Large-scale seed and vegetable production is done in the medium highlands (1,600 - 2,100m high) and demonstrations are located near the main consumer markets of Addis Ababa and Adama (Nazreth) to show farmers the benefits of quality seeds of improved varieties.
