Solagrow PLC is a Dutch Holding company that was registered in Ethiopia in 2006 and started operations in Debre Zeit in 2007. Its name is a combination of the Latin word ‘solanum’ [a group of crops that the potato is part of] and ‘grow’. The company acts as a facilitator of agricultural inputs to Ethiopian farmers, mainly smallholder farmers.

Over 470 employees work on a total of eight farms set up with the objective of producing better seeds and better breeds of dairy cattle. For this, new varieties are introduced, also from the Netherlands, approved at government level, demonstrated to farmers and then sold through local sales points.

The first Solagrow seeds were available on the market beginning of 2012. So far, around hundred farmers have adopted these new varieties. Solagrow prefers to sell its seeds via direct sales at one of its demonstration farms or small seed shops. This way, the company assures the quality of the product. In the past, some suppliers started mixing high quality seeds with local varieties decreasing the quality and failing to bring the desired outcome for the farmers.
